Don’t Work for Peanuts!

There are many things we need to learn as freelance writers and I am here to pin point some of them to you.

#1- Don’t ever sell yourself short. Charge your clients a rate that is worth your experience and time. You are working just like everybody else, have to pay the bills, rent and take care of loved ones. You are a writer and this is a respected career. Know this, live it, love it. Don’t sell your services for 0.2 cents an article. I started out at 0.5 cents per word and have only gone higher from there. I will never except less unless in dire need. These clients need to know that we are confident in what we do and that we are worthy of being paid a good rate.

#2- Make sure you always proofread your work. If you are applying for writing jobs, of course they will not accept you if you have errors and spelling mistakes all over your samples. I am not the best when it comes to grammar, but I use microsoft word to spell check my work. I even double checked this blog. :-) Tip: Check, check and re-check before submitting!

#3- Freelance writing can be isolating at times, but distraction can also cause means for failure or writers block. Set your hours in the day and stick to them. Turn off cell phones and home phones, as well as pagers, televisions etc. They will only throw you off track.

#4- Submit your work to reputable companies. Check them out and see what they are about. Do some research before willy nilly submitting your work. The company will be impressed if you send samples that relate to their business.

Best of luck out there! The pen is mightier than the sword, and then some!
